Father
Thomas P. Ferguson was appointed the Pastor of Saint Thomas à Becket
on June 17, 2004 by Bishop Paul Loverde, Bishop of Arlington. Fr. Tom was transferred to the chancery offices on June 25, 2008. Fr. Tom was born in Woodside, New York on May 27, 1966.
He has five siblings. After having attended elementary school in Woodside,
the family moved to Alexandria, Virginia where Fr. Tom graduated from
Bishop Ireton High School in 1984.
In 1987 Fr. Tom graduated
from Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales and went on to earn a master's
degree in 1989 and subsequently his Doctorate in 1991 from the University
of Virginia. Called to the priesthood, Fr. Tom was accepted to Mount Saint
Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland for studies in Theology. He served
as a deacon at St. Mary's in Alexandria.
Ordained to the priesthood by Bishop John
R. Keating of Arlington on May 21, 1994, Fr. Tom was assigned as parochial
vicar of Saint Bernadette Parish in Springfield, Virginia, a post in which
he served until 1996. The next two years Fr. Tom was at Saint Paul University
in Ottawa, Canada where he completed studies in Canon Law. In 1998 he
was appointed to the diocesan Marriage Tribunal during which time he also
served as a parochial vicar of Saint Luke Parish in McLean, Virginia until
2002 when he was named parish administrator of St. Bernadette Parish in
Springfield, Virginia. In 2004 Fr. Tom was named a judge on the Tribunal.
Having served on several diocesan committees,
including the Ecumenical Committee and the Committee for the Diocesan
Twenty Fifth Anniversary Celebration, Fr. Tom also has served as secretary
of the Presbyteral Council since 1999.
An accomplished writer, Fr. Tom is the
author of "Catholic and American: The Political Theology of John
Courtney Murray", published by Sheed and Ward in 1994. Fr. Tom also
authored the four-part series "History of the Church in Virginia"
which was published in the Arlington Herald in the summer of 1999.
